The history of Liverpool is inextricably linked with the sea, and the city’s maritime heritage has helped six different areas of the city to earn UNESCO World Heritage status. Visit the Merseyside Maritime Museum in the Albert Dock to uncover the fantastic maritime history of Liverpool and the surrounding area.
The museum contains a range of different exhibits about the life and loss of major Liverpool ships, including a fascinating selection of objects from the Titanic. Although the Titanic never visited Liverpool, the liner was registered to the city. There is also a permanent exhibition on the life, loss and legacy of the Lusitania cruise liner which was sunk during World War One. Visitors can also uncover the story of the MV Derbyshire, which was the largest British cargo vessel to be lost at sea.
Other fascinating exhibitions include; a section about ship builders; an exhibition on the role that the city played in World War II, information about life at sea; and a gallery containing art inspired by the sea and the city’s maritime past. There is a special education and fun zone for younger children which gives them the chance to enjoy the maritime theme is a safe environment.
