U-Boat Story

The U-Boat Story in Birkenhead tells the amazing story of life on board a German U-boat (submarine). Visitors have the opportunity to look around a real U-Boat (U-534) which is situated in the docks. The interior has been partitioned into fours zones with special glass viewing areas so as to preserve the vessel whilst allowing visitors to get the full experience.

A number of other artefacts are also on display in the museum, to help to give visitors the full story about the life of a German submariner. One of the most fascinating exhibits on display is an example of a German enigma machine. These machines were used to send coded messages between boats so that the allied forces would not be able to anticipate troop movement. This was considered to be one of the most advanced code systems in the world at that time. The U-Boat Story also contained some interactive displays and a range of audio-visual materials to help visitors to get the full experience.

Visitors have the opportunity to combine their ticket with a trip on a tourist ferry across the Mersey. This historic crossing is one of the most famous crossings in the United Kingdom.
